The Tug of War Tour is a thought-provoking and multi-dimensional artistic endeavor that explores narratives of conflict and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. The brainchild of Israeli-American M.C. Sneakas and M.C. Serch (of Third Bass fame and VH1’s White Rapper Show), the tour features the controversial rap group ‘Most Hated’ (consisting of Sneakas and Muslim-Iranian rapper Mazzi), in addition to spoken word poets Vanessa Hidary and Tahani Salah (both of whom have been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam).

Mark Danner @ McNally Jackson

Mark Danner will be here reading and discussing his newest book Stripping Bare the Body: Politics, Violence, War. Mark is a journalistic heavy-hitter, as insightful and well-written, as respected, as they come. You might recognize his name most recently from his work for the NYRB, but he was also a staff writer for The New Yorker for a time. He's also a professor at Bard and UC Berkeley. We're one of his only free, open events in town, and I'm pretty proud to have him in. Stripping Bare the Body is a look at places of upheaval in recent history, among them Haiti, Kosovo, and our own "black sites". As the subtitle says, Danner is fascinated with the roles of political violence on the world stage, particularly where America is involved. I've been reading this one myself and it's a massively accomplished book. It'll be a standard of war reportage for years to come.

Myopenbar and Drambuie presents: Cinema 16 with musical guest These Are Powers

During the silent film, live music enhanced the moving picture and brought communities together through a visceral, interactive audio-visual experience. Today, the film experience has been reduced to the tiny screens of our laptops and iPods, oftentimes experienced alone. Cinema 16 offers a revival of community, recreating the experience of the silent film era. Curator and artist Molly Surno programs obscure vintage films and pairs them with contemporary New York musicians. Bands are commissioned to compose a musical score in order to modernize the 1920’s tradition of live music accompanying films.

Cinema 16 initially began in 1947 as a New York based avant-garde film society. Inspired by Maya Deren’s Greenwich Village exhibition of experimental films, Amos Vogel and his wife Marcia decided to create a community based on this type of filmmaking. Now over four decades later Molly Surno brings the spirit of experimental and underground cinema back to New York.

Arts For Art Presents the World Premier of Order From Chaos by Ana Isabel Ordonez, accompanied with live music by Herb Robertson Ensemble @ Flamboyan Theater, Clemente Solo Velez Cultural Center

Order From Chaos (2009); a documentary-drama directed by Ana Isabel Ordonez, describing the journey of Holocaust Survivor Albert Ketzenger, as he faces his painful past. We follow him as he goes back through the memories of the chaos of World War II with imprisonment, love and loss, and as he seeks some kind of resolution. Order From Chaos establishes a dialogue between documentary and narrative, by joining interview footage with Holocaust survivors and fictionalized dramatic scenes.

In this dialogue a third voice is heard. For the filmmaker to bring the story fully to life she has collaborated with Herb Robertson, acclaimed composer and trumpeter. Mr. Robertson has composed a beautiful score, rich and lyrical, interacting with the images and words, creating new relationships between different forms of expression and new ways of relating to 'the film' as a work of art. Film becomes recontextualized and takes on new meanings when it is accompanied by a live performance. Arts For Art supports this project and is proud to present the World premiere screening.

Last night at SOB’s, Jewish and Muslim hip hop and spoken word artists alike came together for Hip Hop Sulha, a night of positive lyrical word play, good vibes and a middle eastern dance party that could not be missed! It was a party that truly did celebrate peace and religious tolerance between two conflicting cultures through a solid line up of talented, socially conscience performers.

The night included smoking hot performances from hip-hop wordsmith Dash Speaks, Chassidic dance hall MC Describe, impressive beat box performer J.Stone and New York based rapper NSR. Who had one of the best songs of the night, when he put a little Jewish twist on Kid Cudi’s “ Day and Night” for an extremely entertaining track called “Shabbos Night”.

The crowning moment of the show was when Muslim spoken word artist, Tahani Salah took the stage with Israeli- American hip-hop artist, Sneakas for a little cultural tug of war. They created a thought provoking dialogue through their artistic means that dealt with both Palestinian and Jewish identity in a positive manner that truly did embody the concept of Hip Hop Sulha. It was a refreshing night that proved the power of the arts in bringing together people of different cultural backgrounds for a healthy dialogue and just an all around good time.

Hip Hop Sulha @ S.O.B

Founded by American-Israeli producer, Diwon, and Jewish community activist Daniel 'Mobius' Sieradski The Hip Hop Sulha reinvents the concept of the traditional Arab sulha (reconciliation) by bringing leading Jewish and Muslim hip-hop musicians together to celebrate peace and religious tolerance via the performing arts. In the past, the series has hosted Hadag Nachash, Saz, Sagol 59, and DJ Spooky to name a few. This evening will feature Chassidic Hip Hop/Soul artist, DeScribe, Jamaican Dancehall artist, TJ Di Hitmaker, World club music DJ, Balagan and a special guest DJ set by NYC-based Israeli expatriates, Electro Morocco.

The Tug of War Tour is a thought-provoking and multi-dimensional artistic endeavor that explores narratives of conflict and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. The brainchild of Israeli-American M.C. Sneakas and M.C. Chen Tamir is an independent curator and arts writer based in New York, Toronto, and Tel-Aviv. She is also the Executive Director of Flux Factory, a non-profit arts center in Queens, NY. Chen holds an M.A. from Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies, a B.A. in Anthropology, and a B.F.A. in Visual Art from York University.

Chen will discuss her work as a curator of experimental documentary video work in a gallery setting. She will screen works by Meiro Koizumi, Tova Mozard, Maayan Amir and Ruti Sela, Avi Mograbi, and Yossi and Itamar — artists who use video to document the hardships of life during political or military distress and the difficulties of formulating one’s identity in the modern world.

I got to catch Cymbals Eat Guitars at Santos on Weds and I have to admit they are going to be a hard act to follow. Their live show pure gut wrenching rock n roll, the lead singer pours his heart out in his performances. They are an absolute must see band of this CMJ. With Miles Benjamin Anthony and Holly Miranda also performing this line up is stacked, definitely worth checking out!
