Founded by American-Israeli producer, Diwon, and Jewish community activist Daniel 'Mobius' Sieradski The Hip Hop Sulha reinvents the concept of the traditional Arab sulha (reconciliation) by bringing leading Jewish and Muslim hip-hop musicians together to celebrate peace and religious tolerance via the performing arts. In the past, the series has hosted Hadag Nachash, Saz, Sagol 59, and DJ Spooky to name a few. This evening will feature Chassidic Hip Hop/Soul artist, DeScribe, Jamaican Dancehall artist, TJ Di Hitmaker, World club music DJ, Balagan and a special guest DJ set by NYC-based Israeli expatriates, Electro Morocco.
The Tug of War Tour is a thought-provoking and multi-dimensional artistic endeavor that explores narratives of conflict and co-existence between Muslims and Jews. The brainchild of Israeli-American M.C. Sneakas and M.C. Serch (of Third Bass fame and VH1’s White Rapper Show), the tour features the controversial rap group ‘Most Hated’ (consisting of Sneakas and Muslim-Iranian rapper Mazzi), in addition to spoken word poets Vanessa Hidary and Tahani Salah (both of whom have been featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam).

Søren Kjærgaard, Andrew Cyrille & Ben Street, "optics" @ The Issue Room Project

Danish Pianist, Søren Kjærgaard performs his "There is a somnambulant quality to Optics, a kind of waking-life feeling. Søren Kjærgaard, a 29-year-old Danish pianist, recruited bassist Ben Street and the phenomenal drummer Andrew Cyrille for this trio. Cyrille, known for his work with the likes of Cecil Taylor and Oliver Lake, is the senior member, and much of what happens revolves around him. The 14-minute title track that opens the CD demands patience from its musicians. Kjærgaard plots out deep, serious chords, employing dramatic pauses as the rumble of mallets on skins establishes the tone. Street picks deliberately on the upper neck of his bass as Kjærgaard then lays down an ascending series of minor chords. A quiet snare roll, a repeated three-key phrase played lightly--this is minimalist bliss. On "Cyrille Surreal," icy, detached chords play against a reluctant swing rhythm, but things evolve, as they always do, and rowdiness finally replaces inertia. - Jazz Times
Should be interesting.

ANVIL: THE STORY OF ANVIL IN AN EXCLUSIVE AND LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCE MOVIE SCREENING AND LIVE PERFORMANCE BY ANVIL! @ Blender Theatre

“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is the directorial debut of screenwriter Sacha Gervasi (“The Terminal”) and follows Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner and their band, Anvil, which released one of the heaviest albums in metal history, 1982’s Metal on Metal. The album influenced an entire musical generation of rock bands, including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, who all went on to sell millions of records. Anvil, on the other hand, took a different path—straight to obscurity. The film is both entertaining and touching as it follows their last-ditch quest for the fame and fortune that has been so elusive to them. “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” is a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream, year after year.

Bishop Allen @ Bowery Ballroom

Not to be confused with Sun City Girl Alan Bishop, this Brooklyn indie four-piece is still mostly flying under the blog radar. But the band's work ethic (releasing an EP each month last year), super-catchy melodies, and ear for experimentation are sure to earn Bishop Allen next-big-thing status sooner rather than later. Christian Rudder sings a bit like a Yankee Ray Davies, relating romantic trifles over acoustic guitar and xylophone, but the Kinks comparisons really ring true on the band's more rockin' tracks. One cover of "Lola" tonight and we'll be swooning.
