Japonais

Category: Hot Restaurants Permalink

Last night, I went out to a new Japanese restaurant, Japonais. This place just opened Wednesday in NYC, but it's a well established spot in Chicago that's been around for a couple years. I must say the food was incredible. I tried a bit of everything on the menu and it was all delicious, the tuna in particular was my favorite and their Japanese Pumpkin cheesecake melts in your mouth.
People are actually comparing Japonais to Morimoto (since many of the staff worked their before), so this place is a definite must. I strongly suggest checking this place out, while you still can a get a reservation.

5 Ninth

Category: Hot Restaurants Permalink

We have only great things to say about the
very tasteful and well executed 5 Ninth.

Still in friends and family mode
we were lucky to be able get a sneak
peak and a taste in this great new space.

My friend Bridgett used to live here.
Her apartment now part of the new
establishment. When she moved in
the only other thing that pulsed
was florent.

This building sits quietly on the part
of the block thats just about two store
lenghts long. Half a block from Pastis
on the same side and backyard to backyard
with Pardieu. Its little curb is part of
the Ninth Ave where people still park their
cars head in.

A familiar face on the outside of construction
wall that obscures the building's facade,
skillfully parsed us off the packed summer
like streets Saturday night to give us a preview.

The environment was perfect, not pretensious.
The backyard garden was still being worked
on. Count on it to be a standout area for
getting away from it all this summer.

Two bowls of Ribs showed up and fell off
the bone, we used a fork. The polite nature
of the environment and the gratis food and
drinks made for a wonderful experience.

Meatpacking Restaurants

Category: Hot Restaurants Permalink

The NYT ran a nice item yesterday on the flood of new
restaurants in the meatpacking district, highlighting
the currently open Spice Market, Matsuri and La Bottega
the later two @ Maritime Hotel and hot spots Barbuto and + Bivio

Coming soon Vento (9th + 14th), and Ono at the Gansevoort Hotel,
also mentioned were the forthcoming Morimot and Buddakan
in Chelsea Market.

I remember well when the only place in the area that had food was
florent and the bagal place on 14th between 9th and washington.

Bar Masa Opens Tonight

Category: Hot Restaurants Permalink

While you've probably already heard how expensive
Masa, Bar Masa's sister restaurant, is going to be
when it opens in a couple weeks, Bar Masa luckily
won't hurt your wallet as bad. This fabulous new
restaurant/bar with it's delicious barbeque
unagi and scallops is a sure hit. Doesnt hurt that
it's in the new Time Warner Center either.
