Review: Björk's Voltaic: The Volta Tour Live in Paris @ School of Visual Arts Theater

I have never really been a die hard fan of Bjork. I have always had the utmost respect for her music as well as her visionary music videos, but never had much of an urge to see her live in concert. So when I attended this screening of her Paris show from the Volta Tour, I didn't completely know what to expect. What I experienced was probably one of the most visually stunning and absolutely gripping live performances I have ever witnessed on the big screen. Shot in High Definition video and audio, Bjork and her lavishly dressed horn posse seem to jump off the screen and in to the theater making viewer feel like they were actually at the show. Songs such as wanderlust and hyper ballad became enthralling rave anthems that had audience dancing in their seat just as much as crowd at the show! The movie most definitely wet my palate for Bjork's upcoming live performance DVD, and judging from the stellar quality of this show it is going to be a must have! DVD drops June 30th!

LIVE from the NYPL & BOOKFORUM PRESENT CULTURAL OBITUARIES:
The Death of Boom Culture? @ The New York Public Library
Now that markets have proven a flawed index of our economic well being, our cultural life needs to look beyond the pat certainties of laissez faire ideology. Among the ills afflicting the American novel at the height of boom culture, Walter Benn Michaels argues, was a curatorial obsession with past oppressions—from slavery to the Holocaust to memoir-style accounts of family abuse. Writers should now be asking less about what it meant to oppose the Holocaust, he contends, and more about what it means to support free trade.
Discussion will include WALTER BENN MICHAELS with DAVID SIMON, SUSAN STRAIGHT & DALE PECK
Should be interesting

Beowulf – A Thousand Years Of Baggage @ the RODA

For all you loyal WUNY readers out there, we here at Whats Up NYC have acquired a couple pairs of tickets to the new play Beowulf – A Thousand Years Of Baggage and want to give them to you! It is going to be an amazing show, so be sure to enter for your chance at the free tixs! All we need is your name and home address. Good Luck!
Beowulf – A Thousand Years Of Baggage examines not only the events of the poem itself (heroes, monsters, retaliation, underwater battles, horses, swords) but also academia and the history of criticism that has sustained and stifled the poem for years. At the heart of the piece is the question of how art survives criticism, as the character Beowulf attempts to reclaim the purity of his tale. The production includes a cast of seven actors- monsters, academics, warriors, kings and dancing ladies- and an eight piece orchestra including viola, bass clarinet, two trombones, harmonicas, guitar, piano, accordion, upright bass, percussion and saw. This experience incorporates 40 box fans, 5 fish tanks and a wrestling ring!
