GoLeft.org Progressive Movie Night Presents: "V for Vendetta" @ Empire State College

GoLeft.org will be sponsoring these screenings of popular progressive movies to help build a community and ignite discussion between the viewers of the movie. This months film is "V for Vendetta" which was pretty controversial for it's vigilante main character and main concentration on creating anarchy and overthrowing the government. I would say it is a perfect movie to begin this movie series with since it has a very strong message that will most likely create some excellent discussions. There will also be free refreshments as well as a chance to win prizes! Be sure to check it out!

Filmmaker Jem Cohen Screens + Discussions @ The Change You Want To See Gallery

"Filmmaker Jem Cohen doesn’t need to smack you over the head with speeches or movie stars or coincidence-driven scenarios to make his point. Instead, he draws it out in the artifacts, detritus, and details of the city. On the one hand he presents the fragments of a periphery that normally go unseen. But rather than bringing a lost landscape into new focus, Cohen manages to bring it into an indistinguishable blur. It is in this shift from the particular to the universal that we can locate a radical politics. "
Come and join Jem as he screens excerpt from his films Chain (2004), Lost Book Found (1996), and selected shorts.A Q & A will follow which should be realy interesting.

King: A Film Record ... Montgomery To Memphis @ The Academy Theater

In celebration of Martin Luther King day there will be a special screening of the original 1970s print of King: A Filmed Record.... Montgomery to Memphis. This epic three hour Oscar nominated documentary is comprised mainly of newsreel and other footage of the period including the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 through the assassination of the civil rights leaser in 1968. All of this footage is beautifully tied together with the speeches of Martin Luther King and dramatic readings of his works from such luminaries of stage and screen from people like Harry Belafonte,Paul Newman and many other cultural icons of the time. Pop Cultures Addicts One Stop Website: getTRIO.com

Being an absolute avid reader of anything having to do with pop culture. I stumbled upon this amazing website which has everything from your television round ups and celebrity gossip to the hottest events in NYC(* which is perfect for me!). getTRIO.com is your one stop website for gossip, the latest in technology and anything you feel you need to keep up with current trends!
getTRIO.com brought to my attention two excellent movies, one newly released on DVD,called King of Kong. Which is a documentary that follows two characters as they strive to break the Guinness Book of World Records top King Kong Score. Sounds pretty entertaining!

Also a cross genre comedy/ horror flick that has kind of haunted my dreams since watching the trailer called Teeth. "It's not a straight-up teen comedy, not quite horror, and not really a drama -- though when a chaste high school student becomes the target of male violence and discovers herself to have an anatomical quirk that makes her a living example of the vagina dentata myth, things get uncomfortably funny, horrifying, and very dramatic, indeed." The film was the talk of Sundance, with its dark take on sexual power and payback. Sounds off the wall! Be sure to check out more about it on the website!

CINEKINK With Maria Beatty @ PIONEER

Tonight at the Pioneer Theater there will be a double header of Maria Beatty's works featuring her signature "erotic noir" style that depicts a ride between pain and pleasure at the hands of a beautiful temptress. Just thinking about it is getting me all hot and bothered. The screening will include:
THE ELEGANT SPANKING
Goddess Rosemary seduces and punishes her Kitty in a play of dominance and submission, creating a fantasy world of nostalgic images that are dripping with sexual perversion.
And
THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS
Caught in the act of coveting her mistress' position, a young maid must submit to her sadism and her lust, her perfect body made the theatre for a re-enactment of the lessons of the Seven Deadly Sins.
..Afterwards there will be cocktails at Chine 1 around the corner, which is a nice way to top off a night of "erotic noir".
