Cinema 16 @ Smack Mellon

Cinema 16 recreates the experience of the silent film era, as curator Molly Surno programs obscure vintage films and pairs them with contemporary New York musicians. Bands are given one month to compose a musical score in order to modernize the tradition of live music accompanying films during the 1920s.
Nick Yulman & the Bone Conductor Mechanical score three films: Georges Méliès magical short L'homme orchestre (One Man Band), Charles Bowers's long lost comical romp A Wild Roomer, and Maya Deren's surrealist masterpiece Meshes of the Afternoon.
In the era of silent film, live music enhanced the moving picture and brought communities together with a visceral, interactive audio-visual experience. Today, when the film experience has been reduced to the tiny screens of our laptops and iPods, oftentimes experienced alone, Cinema 16 offers a revival of community.

Written during a 9-week spell of pneumonia, Bergman's Persona is considered one of his most provocative films, exploring the symbiotic relationship between Elisabeth, an accomplished stage actress (Ullmann) who falls mute during a performance of Electra, and Sister Alma, the nurse (Andersson) hired to take care of her. As Alma confesses her most candid secrets to her silent, yet seemingly empathetic patient, she feels her very identity fusing with that of Elisabeth's, who has willed her persona as celebrity, wife and mother to her caretaker.
Liv Ullmann is a Norwegian actress, author, and film director. She has played lead roles in nine films by Ingmar Bergman, including Persona and Cries and Whispers. She lives in New York City.

A Century Ago: The Film of 1908, A New generation @ The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International

The Academy celebrates the year 1908 and its developmental contributions to motion pictures with a program of selected
films in a special New York presentation of A CENTURY AGO: THE FILMS OF 1908.
In 1908, three years after local storefront nickelodeons began a period of dramatic expansion, a new generation of
filmmakers that included D.W. Griffith, Émile Cohl and Max Linder were pushing “theatrical” conventions into more purely
cinematic forms. By the year’s end, however, film companies and other key industry participants had founded the Motion
Picture Patents Company, a business trust that sought to monopolize motion picture production.
This special “Monday Nights with Oscar” presentation will offer a sampling of 1908’s cinematic entertainments and artistic
achievements, including Biograph’s “After Many Years,” in which director D.W. Griffith experiments with parallel cutting and
camera movement; Vitagraph’s trick film “The Thieving Hand”; Gaumont’s sensational “Fantasmagorie,” animated by Émile
Cohl; “A Disastrous Flirtation”; and one of the earliest Italian productions “Le Farfalle” (“Butterflies”), presented from a hand-
tinted print.
Most films will be screened from 35mm prints drawn from the collections of the Academy Film Archive, the Library of
Congress, and the UCLA Film & Television Archive, among others.

Work-In-Progress Screening: Changing Face of Harlem by Shawn Batey @ Third World Newsreel
TWN Production Workshop alumna, Shawn Batey presents a one-hour documentary that reviews development in Harlem over the last twenty years and ponders the future of the community. From the voices of residents, business owners, politicians, developers and clergy, this documentary reveals feelings of betrayal and hope, deferred dreams, and struggles of a neighborhood. The film illustrates how, in the years of the 1980s and 1990s, the New York City government along with non-profit faith based organizations saved and revamped the abandoned vacant housing stock that became synonymous with Harlem.

Work-In-Progress Screening: White: A Study in Color by Joel Katz @ Third World Newsreel
Please join TWN Board member Joel Katz (director of Strange Fruit, 2002) for a documentary/essay about what it means to be white in America. Both a personal memoir and a sociological study, White: A Study in Color will put the notion of "post-racial" America under a critical lens. From the Obama ascendancy to the predictions of population demographers that by the year 2042 whites will become America's largest minority, the very notion of being white is ripe for scrutiny. Where has 'white' come from, and where is it going?

The Tree of Life in the Wheel of Becoming A Discussion with Darren Aronofsky @ Rubin Museum of Art

Film director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler) re-examines the quest for eternal life initially explored in his film The Fountain. Is man's yearning for eternal youth genetically predetermined? Is the longing for everlasting life part of our survival instinct? Or is the quest one our minds fabricate to insulate us against the fear of dying? He is in conversation with Patrick Grim, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Stony Brook, who works in logic, philosophy of mind, computer modeling, ethics and metaphysics.
Should be an interesting discussion!

Screening of Begging Naked @ The Cell Theater

Here is a great movie that is not to be missed!
Begging Naked was shot over a 10 year period and shows how the dramatic changes in NYC's Times Square devastated the life of the main character Elise .
Begging Naked began when Elise Hill asked fellow artist Karen Gehres to record her life on videotape. With straightforward honesty, Elise recounts how at age 15 she left an abusive home and wound up on the streets of New York as a prostitute, stripper and drug addict. Her sense of humor and striking face just barely conceal her pain. Years later she entered rehab and started selling her art, but soon returned to stripping, recreating graphic images from the clubs she worked in. But Mayor Giulianis zoning laws put the squeeze on the sex industry in New York, and the film follows Elise as she wrestles with her uncertain fate. Drug abuse, isolation, mental illness, and eviction complicate her journey. This inspiring and heartbreaking film transcends its grim subject, gracefully creating an intimate portrait of a fascinating individual struggling to survive in a city that would prefer she didn't exist.

Rooftop Films Presents Woodpecker With Musical Guest Mountains @ Chelsea Market

Here is a FREE event at the Chelsea Market which includes a live performance of Mountains, Free Radeburger beer and screening of the film Woodpecker.
Woodpecker- Fanatical birdwatchers have descended upon a small town in the Arkansas bayou in hopes of finding the celebrated Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Declared extinct in the 1940's, the bird has apparently been spotted by numerous experts. Enter amateur birder and poet Johnny Neander, who has convinced his taciturn sidekick that he will be the one to find the elusive woodpecker. The ensuing chaos divides the small town between believers and non-believers, rabid environmentalists and opportunistic entrepreneurs. Much like the bird itself, Woodpecker explores the intersection of fact and fiction, manipulating our notions of documentary and narrative techniques within a tragic comedy about hope, perception, and some very, very strange birds.

Emmanuel Jal's War Child Screening and performance @ Faison Firehouse Theater

Emmanuel Jal is the author of War Child. Jal. The book published by St. Martin’s Press and distributed by Barnes & Noble will be launched during Black History Month. Jal whose own childhood was robbed from him, aims to protect the childhood of others through music. "Music is powerful. It is the only thing that can speak into your mind, your heart and your soul without your permission." According to Jal, in times of war, starvation, hunger and injustice, the only way to survive the daily tragedy in Sudan is to allow the inner-soul to be uplifted through music, which is like soul food to heal pain. Through his heartfelt lyrics, he opens the world up to the corruption and greed of the Sudanese government; central to the themes of his songs is the campaign for peace of opposing sides in Sudan and the clear message that children have no place in wars. The youth of the world might feel like War Children; however, awareness of the problem starts dialogue towards a solution.

Planted alongside the whirligig that is FDR Drive, the environmental venue is the perfect oasis-in-the-desert to lure the ten-speeds and fixed-gears over bridges for the first time (the previous six powwows went down in Brooklyn). With its call to cameras, the series offers cycle-centered moving pictures that are made by riders and voted on, with appropriate egalitarianism, by an enthusiastic audience. Filmmaker Jem Cohen Screens + Discussions @ The Change You Want To See Gallery

"Filmmaker Jem Cohen doesn’t need to smack you over the head with speeches or movie stars or coincidence-driven scenarios to make his point. Instead, he draws it out in the artifacts, detritus, and details of the city. On the one hand he presents the fragments of a periphery that normally go unseen. But rather than bringing a lost landscape into new focus, Cohen manages to bring it into an indistinguishable blur. It is in this shift from the particular to the universal that we can locate a radical politics. "

Pop Cultures Addicts One Stop Website: getTRIO.com

Being an absolute avid reader of anything having to do with pop culture. I stumbled upon this amazing website which has everything from your television round ups and celebrity gossip to the hottest events in NYC(* which is perfect for me!). getTRIO.com is your one stop website for gossip, the latest in technology and anything you feel you need to keep up with current trends!
getTRIO.com brought to my attention two excellent movies, one newly released on DVD,called King of Kong. Which is a documentary that follows two characters as they strive to break the Guinness Book of World Records top King Kong Score. Sounds pretty entertaining!

Also a cross genre comedy/ horror flick that has kind of haunted my dreams since watching the trailer called Teeth. "It's not a straight-up teen comedy, not quite horror, and not really a drama -- though when a chaste high school student becomes the target of male violence and discovers herself to have an anatomical quirk that makes her a living example of the vagina dentata myth, things get uncomfortably funny, horrifying, and very dramatic, indeed." The film was the talk of Sundance, with its dark take on sexual power and payback. Sounds off the wall! Be sure to check out more about it on the website!

Ana Voog uses her cam as a 24/7 performance art vehicle. Dionne Lowen quit her job selling cars to open an ethical porn site. And Teresa Senft, adding her notions of biography, privacy and micro-celebrity, declares that rather than 15 minutes of fame, in the future "everyone will be famous to 15 people." (Directed by Aerlyn Weissman, 2004, Canada, 52 minutes.)
preceded by
"Dick Ho: Asian Male Porn Star"
A look at the "mythical" 70s porn legend, Dick Ho, who was allegedly so well endowed that rumors of a porn industry conspiracy to eliminate any knowledge of his existence persist today. ( Directed by Jeffrey Lei, 2004, USA, 31 minutes. With Sharon Mitchell, Kay Parker, Annie Sprinkle and Mika Tan.)

What follows is an emotional journey for Lars and the people around him.

Ken Burns and Robert Stone a conversation on 'The War'@ New York Public Library

Come and join a night of conversation with Ken Burns and Robert Stone about Ken Burn's new documentary about the World War II called 'The War'. The film tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of more than 40 men and women from four quintessentially American towns —Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota—who experienced and helped to win the most extraordinary war in history. Woven largely from their memories, the narrative unfolds as the war unfolded—month by bloody month, with the outcome always in doubt. The film series explores the most intimate human dimensions of a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America demonstrating that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. This John Water's classic has got to be one of the raunchiest movies that has ever been screened at the MoMa! If you don't know anything about the movie let me put this in to perspective. A 300-pound transvestite Divine eats real dog poo. There are also chickens crushed between copulating lovers and black-market babies sold to support pornography. Romance & Cigarettes + 3:10 to Yuma

Definitely two movies that are totally different, but both very intriguing. First off, A musical starring none other than James Gandolphini (Tony Soprano singing? Weird), Kate Winslet and the always brilliant Christopher Walken. A down-and-dirty musical set in the world of working-class New York, tells a story of a husband's journey into infidelity and redemption when he must choose between his seductive mistress and his beleaguered wife (hmm this kind of sounds like a Soprano conflict). Still is should be a blast! That is if you like musicals.

Secondly, there is 3:10 to Yuma. I feel all I have to say is it has Christian Bale, Russell Crowe and Mr. Easy Rider himself Peter Fonda in a gunslinging western. I mean how much more Bad Ass can you get? the story is about a small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who's awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher. Wow I am way too excited for this movie!

Among the most powerful sequences in the film are articulate, fiery interviews with the men and women whose parents joined the Garvey movement more than 80 years ago. Bollywood In Brooklyn: Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin / Dj Rekha's Bollywood Disco @ Prospect Park Bandshell
Come check out the bell-bottomed dreaminess of Rishi Kapoor and Tariq as they lip-synch and boogie their way through three hours of musical numbers in the 1977 Bollywood classic Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin. Nasir Hussain's dizzying Technicolor action-romance tells the story of Kajal, a heavily mascara'd heiress who gets caught up in a plot to hunt down a cache of diamonds as well as (surprise!) a melodramatic love triangle. Keep an eye out for spectacularly low-tech, high-impact scenes, like Kajal floating through India's skies on balloons. The Fountainhead @ The Elevated Acre

King Vidor directs Gary Cooper in this brilliant adaptation of Ayn Rand’s novel about an idealistic young architect confronting the establishment. The story captures the power of the press and politicians to mold a city in their own conservative image and the futility of a visionary trapped by his own idealistic principles. A conversation with filmmaker Caspar Stracke and a screening of his short No Damage (12 minutes, 2002), created from fragments of over 80 different feature and documentary films showing the architecture of New York City, precedes the film.

Out Door Cinema 2007 Presents The 5,000 Fingers oF Dr. T @ Socrates Sculpture Park

This movie can either be considered a classic stoner flick or a highly imaginative masterpiece. Actually I guess it can be both, but it makes sense due to the fact that this film remains to be Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel's only film. I mean look at all those classic Dr. Seuss books they are amazingly trippy! So be sure to check out this wild ride of a movie it should be a good time:
Dr. Seuss' 1953 musical about the perils of coerced collective labor — a thinly veiled metaphor for Ruskie economics — tells the tale of Bart Collins and his evil, authoritarian piano teacher, Dr. T, who is trying to enslave 500 little boys to play a gigantic piano. Teams of shirtless musicians parade around tooting on fantastical instruments, like a psychedelic Busby Berkeley show. This sterling example of Eisenhower-era psychic repression was filmed in glorious Technicolor.

Power of the Peep @ Anthology Film Archives

Yeah I know, I couldn't believe it the first time I read it! Alas someone has made a documentary chronicling the history of this delicious marshmallow treat that takes over everyones house every Easter. Check out the synopsis "Boxed in sets of five and staring out with sugar-blackened eyes, Marshmallow Peeps have been emerging like clockwork from a factory in Bethlehem Pennsylvania since the 1950s. They were born in the mind of a Russian immigrant, hatched in Easter baskets, and eaten by the dozens across the country. Then they armed themselves with lances, stood in front of trucks, mutated in microwave ovens and set out on their own. This is the story of what happened when a marshmallow met modern America. It’s the story of how a sweet candy product got to the shelves of your convenience store – and what happened after it left them behind." This sounds like an amazing movie, it sounds like a must see!

Fabricando Tom Zé @ the MoMA

Tom Zé was one of the major forces within the Tropicália movement in Brazil in the mid through late 60s. Out of all the musicians who were part of the movement, including Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Zé took things musically (and visually for that matter) farther than anyone else, using typically non-musical objects like vacuum cleaners and typewriters alongside guitars and vocals, and winding dissonance and strange time signatures into his music. His career continues on today, and this film documents a tour from last year, when he was 70-years-old.
