The Field Panel Discussion Starving Artist: Fact or Fiction: Non-Profit Doesn’t = No Money @ Galapagos Art Space

Why do artists often think that you are a sell out if you make money from your art? Why do we seem to believe that you must suffer to make great art, yet we pine away for the seemingly Utopian state sponsored art cultures of Berlin and Brussels? Is there something inherently hierarchical and damaging in the “gift economy” that the arts and philanthropy work in? The non-profit model that most artists use may not be the best model for your work, yet we gravitate to it like lemmings? What about being for-profit or for-benefit? What does that even mean really? What about LLCs and L3Cs and what about a blend model?
All of the question will be answered in the lively discussion with that will commence be sure to check it out.
Moderated by Sara Juli, Performance Artist/Director of Development at Dance Theater Workshop. Confirmed Panelists (as of 8/21) include Robert Elmes, Director, Galapagos Art Space; Amanda Clayman, Financial Wellness Program, The Actors Fund; Chris Ajemian, Artist, Entrepreneur; And more TBA.

George Lois: The Esquire Covers @ MoMa

Looks like an awesome exhibit to check out before it leaves!
From 1962 to 1972, George Lois changed the face of magazine design with his ninety-two covers for Esquire magazine. He stripped the cover down to a graphically concise yet conceptually potent image that ventured beyond the mere illustration of a feature article. Lois exploited the communicative power of the mass-circulated front page to stimulate and provoke the public into debate, pressing Americans to confront controversial issues like racism, feminism, and the Vietnam War. Viewed as a collection, the covers serve as a visual timeline and a window onto the turbulent events of the 1960s. Initially received as jarring and prescient statements of their time, the covers have since become essential to the iconography of American culture.

BRAINWAVE Conversations on Consciousness 4: Does bacteria have free will? @ Rubin Museum of Art

Artist and television host Bokara Legendre speaks with Jeremy Narby, author of Intelligence in Nature: An Inquiry into Knowledge, on plant consciousness. Narby has found that independent intelligence is not unique to humanity; plants, bacteria, and other nonhuman entities make self-deterministic choices. Such research can translate into our understanding of humanity, as well. Should be an interesting eye opening discussion.
